Dear Mother of God, I’m desperate here,

you know last night I couldn’t sleep for fear,

unable to shift my thoughts from that exam,

as boring and sticky as tarmacadam.

You have no idea yet what I went through,

but I cannot rest till I have told you.

I know you will find it hard to believe me,

and you will be inclined to laugh when you hear me,

but had you been there where I was standing,

then you would realize what I was suffering.

One morning I said to myself, “Let’s give it our best,

I want to go and study for that new test.”

I went to buy the book: but…what a heavy bore…

it was soon apparent I wasn’t up to the chore;

as soon as I had started I began to tire,

I swear to you I would have thrown it on the fire

as from the first page it was clear

for me to say, “I have a major problem here!”

A whole pile of arguments and dissertations,

“But this,” I said, “is enough to give me hallucinations!”

Moreover it was all about such extraordinary cases!

Weird tales of thieves, assassins, and tarts in laces!…

But somehow I managed to reach the last page,

ploughing through all the miseries of this age

and one day I decided: “I’ve had enough,

These things are boring me to death.”

So I went up before the examiner.

That old bore drove me to the point of dementia:

he wanted to know the crimes of omission,

and in a crime of malice how you establish intention,

the precedents for statutes of limitation…

My back was beginning to give me aggravation.

I wanted to say, “Look here, I’m not a crim!

Of such things I don’t understand a thing!”

But impatiently he said, “Come back another time…”

and I nearly gave him the two-fingered sign.

But I thought better of it pretty quick,

for fear the effects of that might stick!

So now as I told you I am here again,

To face the examiner and watch my tongue!

But if you’d like to know the moral of my explanation

regarding the business of education?

Rather than strive for the university’s shield,

better stick to the soil and tend the field!
